WD Live TV

by on October 25th, 2011

wdfWDTV_Livenetwork.jpg[1]Two weeks ago Michael Reyes from HardwareGeeks.com let me hold his brand spanking new WD TV Live streaming media player, and I have yet to give it back. He probably won’t get it back either because it’s an awesome device.

The WD TV Live allows me to stream content from my computer, or network storage device and see it on my television. I can now easily show my friends and family pictures with out them hovering around my laptop’s monitor, or I can watch Netflix, Hulu (Oh man I used to love this show called Outlaw), rent movies from Blockbuster and CinemaNow, and even listen to music from Pandora or Spotify. You will have to update your Spotify account but it is well worth it. I can even check my Facebook without opening my laptop.

Intel’s Museum of Me…

by on June 3rd, 2011

If someone were to ask you how you visualized yourself – what would you say? Who would pop into your head? Which memories?
Michael (HardwareGeeks.com) sent me an email earlier this week with a link to Intel’s Museum of Me, and I tried logging into my Facebook account to see what it would do, and it did nothing…so I forgot about it and went on my merry way. This morning, a friend of mine posted a link to her museum and I thought, crap, it didn’t work for me.
I gave it another shot and then smiled for about 3 minutes – the length of the ‘exhibit’. Intel has strategically figured out how to allow the world to visualize themselves, according to their social network, words they choose, and pictures they post. It was great.

Somehow it evolves into a discussion about Facebook ads, something Maya works with every day. Needless to say, there could be some improvements made. We then discuss the Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Vegas to see if it’s really as great as it once was. Brand new Apple iPad 2 casing was shown off at the event which seems to be the only highlight we could spot. The Mac App Store was released this week to many awaiting fans, some of whom were disappointed in the new model for desktop software. Take a listen and enjoy the show! Continue Reading…

Facebook, the Gmail Killer?

by on November 15th, 2010

Whether we can admit it or not, Facebook plays a part in many of our lives (for some more than others).

I’m sure you’ve all heard that Facebook is releasing Project Titan today and many are calling it the “gmail killer”.  This new capability combines SMS, IM, email, and Facebook messages.  It will be released slowly over the next few months and users will be able to set up “@facebook.com” accounts if they want (but not required).

Will you trade in your @gmail.com account for the facebook’s new messaging system?

The girls puzzle over Facebook activation numbers for the past month falling of a cliff from 7.8M to just 320,000 new accounts in the US for the month! Google Games plus Zynga, and Reddit Gold also make the list of topics the ladies break down in this episode. [Oh, and pardon the occasional echo. Technical difficulties... :( ... ]

Review: Favorite Facebook Game App- Platinum Life

by on April 20th, 2010

When my friends and family started playing farm town on Facebook I made fun of them (sorry guys!). I already own a dog and had a garden in Texas. There is no need for me to have a virtual farm nagging me about harvesting and animals. I vowed I would NEVER play one of the Facebook games till I had a demo for Platinum life in Beta. It’s a hip hop game on Facebook that let’s you battle it out as either a DJ, Rapper or Singer. I haven’t been to hip hop class in a while so Platinum Life in Beta seemed to fill the void.

You can dress up your character, battle friends or other players, and play different venues. I decided to be a rapper because I secretly think I should have been a rapper in my younger life (my fake name was Fast Forward). I think there are still a few glitches because I dressed my character up and it didn’t take…still though the game is addictive if you have nothing to do besides look for a job:-). The only thing that annoys me is the “juice level.”

Me: “Dang it I need more juice…”

Marco: “What the heck is juice…”

Me: (Unresponsive and annoyed)

Marco: “What is this juice you talk about?”

I looked over at him in a heated moment of frustration (plus in the middle of critical stages in the game) and in my head I thought:

“I invited you to play this game and you still haven’t accepted my invite! I am not telling you what juice is and furthermore your farm town sucks! HAHA!”

I didn’t say this out loud though I am guessing he will be reading this shortly. Opps!

Anyhow juice is how you get more playing time and points. I think the more time you accrue the more points you get. I have no idea how to get more juice (besides purchasing it…um NO!). All I know is I am at level 13, though I think you can go all the way to level 40…I mean I have a social life so I hope I don’t get that high…Then again I have only been playing it a week and up to level 13. If your into testing out a beta version of Platinum Life and want to live out your inner hip hop side check it out. Just try and battle me…

Web Wednesday: My Famebook

by on March 24th, 2010

Okay, so if you’re a cute geek chances are you’re on Facebook.  With the site overtaking Google for the first time as the most popular destination on the Web, you’re really missing out on a chunk of culture if you’re one of the few profile-less people out there.

For the rest of us that are on Facebook, you’ve probably seen a lot of people with the “my year in status updates” around December of 2009. I thought it was pretty neat; after all, I tend to forget all of my status updates and now they are all there in one place. Now, a new site has taken it even further…enter My Famebook, a site that aggregates all of your updates in one place and puts it into a real notebook.

famebook

Basically, it’s three easy steps: you connect your Facebook account, pick your “wittiest friends” (according to the site), customize and preview it and you’re done! The site automatically picks from your stream and each page has a post from your feed. Ever wanted to write a book but didn’t have the time? Maybe you’ve been doing it all along. Need a unique coffee table book? Here it is. Or hey, how about a trip down a digital memory lane the old fashioned way? Yup, this would be it.

Of course, I do wonder if they would ever figure out a way for you to make this into a gift. Maybe one day you could stream in updates from someone else. What do you guys think? Is this a real famebook, or kind of a lamebook?

The Internet is a big place. There are so many sites to read, widgets to play with, and viral videos to watch. In the midst of all the trending topics and links being sent around, sometimes there are those little tidbits on the Internet that go unnoticed. Have something to share? Web Wednesday: A Million Fans for Megatron

by on March 10th, 2010

Hello out there, fellow Cute geeks! I took a break last week from scouring the Web for interesting sites and the like, but back again this week. This time, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the things spreading around the Internet like the common cold or H1N1 virus. Of course, Facebook was not one to disappoint.

If you haven’t seen this yet, yes, believe me – I went through the same emotions as well: surprise, suspicion, and finally, geeky acceptance. Apparently there is someone out there who is trying to garner enough support in order for his future niece/nephew to be named MEGATRON.

First there are pages about pickles, and now there are pages that seem to push the boundaries of conventional child naming. What else will pop up on Facebook? I guess there are worse names out there. At least with a name like MEGATRON, it only serves as a reminder to the many legions of Transformer fans and kids in the 80′s … or at least serves as a warning to other children on the playground.

Yup, in case you were wondering, you can take a look at the page and become a fan yourself here.

Ustream…I stream…We all should Ustream!!

by on November 9th, 2009

ustream_logo-youreonIt’s rare now-a-days I stumble upon a website and think that it’s pretty cool. I recently found out about this unique website called Ustream.tv and had to check it out.  Ustream is a live interactive video broadcast website that allows anyone with a camera and internet to broadcast to a worldwide audience.  The website was originally started by 2 US Army Officers that wanted to find a way for soldiers to interact live with all their loved ones all at the same time.  In 2006 Ustream was born and an instant hit with public figures and celebrities.  Some of Ustreams users that are in the public eye (to name are few) are Obama, Hilary Clinton, Ashton Kutcher, Diddy, and many more (not to mention cutegeek)!

I have to admit once I heard about this I was pumped!  My parents, siblings, and in-laws back in Texas have web-cams; what took me so long to find Ustream?  I also realized I HAD to tell my cousin who recently got deployed to Iraq about this! Imagine how awesome that would be for us family members to keep in touch with her while she is over there (till 2011 I might add)!
