Once again, HP and Project Runway have teamed together further uniting fashion design and technology. While watching the season premier of Project Runway last night you probably noticed each designer was given a HP EliteBook Tablet PC notebook , loaded with a second-generation Intel® Core i7™ processor, to create this seasons winning looks. HP will be assisting the designers throughout season 9 by also providing products such as HP TouchSmart desktop PCs, HP video cameras and the HP Veer. A $50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel will also be part of the winner’s prize package.
As a graphic and web designer I am excited to see all the ways the contestants will be able to utilize these products from HP to be able to do everything from creating designs for challenges to keeping in touch with their families throughout the competition. Meet Maya Elektra, CuteGeek’s youngest tech reviewer and the star of our HP Wireless Printer Video clip earlier this month.

Maya is 7 and a half years old and is just learning to read. She has grown up around technology, art and literature and loves anything that brings them together. She attends The Child School on Roosevelt Island where she competed in this years science fair against kids from kindergarten to twelfth grade and she won a Science Award this month in her Washington Heights community through The Children Arts & Sciences Workshop. Her Science Club teacher has agreed to let Maya demo some educational tech in class when they reconvene in September.

This is Maya chillin’ in the subway at Columbus Circle, immersed in playing Angry Birds on the new Android Infuse.

On March 1st 2009 we made our very first post “Welcome to CuteGeek.com!” and in these two years, we’ve come a long way since that very first welcome post. At first we were worried no one would visit us (who wouldn’t worry) but as the days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, we realized we shouldn’t worry so much.

Over the past two years we have featured Brilliant women such as Ann Finnie (HP) and Leslie Sobon (AMD), and brought you reviews on the 2011 Lincoln MKX and The Netgear Stora.

I am Zenia Duran and I was graciously invited by mama cutegeeker to come on board on this amazing project of increasing the volume of the female’s voice in the tech world. I love being a female and I love technology, therefore, I just couldn’t resist so here I am.

I’ve been waiting for the perfect time, and way, to introduce myself and found my inspiration … I even came up with a title:

She’s celebrating 50 years in show business and songstress Dionne Warwick has sang many love songs during her career but today she was able to show a lot of love. With the help of Hewlett Packard, Warwick donated a technology lab to her alma mater currently known as the Dionne Warwick Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship, located in East Orange, NJ. I was given the opportunity by Jim Christensen, Director of HP Media Relations, to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the smiles of elementary students light up.

HP and its partners Adobe, Atomic Learning and Microsoft collaborated with Warwick to donate the following products to the school: HP Compaq 6000 Pro All-in-One Business PCs, HP Mini 100e Education Edition netbook PCs, HP TouchSmart 9100 Business PCs, HP camcorders, Adobe Digital School Collection, Atomic Learning Professional Development courses for teachers, Microsoft Office 2010. To the surprise of the administration, teachers, students and Mrs. Warwick herself, HP customized the HP Mini 100e Education Edition netbook PCs by embossing the school’s name and logo on each one. Students, along with their teachers, filled the cafeteria with applause and screams of excitement and appreciation in welcoming their personalized gifts.

Being a teacher myself, I was moved to see that big people have not forgotten about the little ones. I always was a fan of Hewlett Packard (own a HP Printer and Laptop), but they got an extra gold star from me when I saw their high executives spend one-on-one time with the kids.

Unfortunately I do not have an iPad though I have tested accessories on my friend’s and demo’d them in the store (I live 4 blocks away from the Apple Store…how can a city girl resist). Admittedly I am an accessories junkie; send me anything that makes my user experience better and more personable the better.

A while ago I received the iLuv Flexi-Clear Case with stand for the iPad in the pink color. The casing has a dot wave shape design and comes in black, blue, pink, and clear. It is tear proof and damage resistant made with a light-weight flexible material. I tried it out on my pal’s iPad and it was pretty simple to put on. The ports were pretty easy to access and and the case seems durable. I intend on doing a second review once I get an iPad since I will be buying the different patterns of the iLuv Flexi-Clear Case with stand for the iPad. The only thing I don’t think I would utilize is the stand that comes with it; simply because it’s not made to compute on…merely just a stand for your iPad.

When my friends and family started playing farm town on Facebook I made fun of them (sorry guys!). I already own a dog and had a garden in Texas. There is no need for me to have a virtual farm nagging me about harvesting and animals. I vowed I would NEVER play one of the Facebook games till I had a demo for Platinum life in Beta. It’s a hip hop game on Facebook that let’s you battle it out as either a DJ, Rapper or Singer. I haven’t been to hip hop class in a while so Platinum Life in Beta seemed to fill the void.

You can dress up your character, battle friends or other players, and play different venues. I decided to be a rapper because I secretly think I should have been a rapper in my younger life (my fake name was Fast Forward). I think there are still a few glitches because I dressed my character up and it didn’t take…still though the game is addictive if you have nothing to do besides look for a job:-). The only thing that annoys me is the “juice level.”

Me: “Dang it I need more juice…”

Marco: “What the heck is juice…”

Me: (Unresponsive and annoyed)

Marco: “What is this juice you talk about?”

I looked over at him in a heated moment of frustration (plus in the middle of critical stages in the game) and in my head I thought:

“I invited you to play this game and you still haven’t accepted my invite! I am not telling you what juice is and furthermore your farm town sucks! HAHA!”

I didn’t say this out loud though I am guessing he will be reading this shortly. Opps!

Anyhow juice is how you get more playing time and points. I think the more time you accrue the more points you get. I have no idea how to get more juice (besides purchasing it…um NO!). All I know is I am at level 13, though I think you can go all the way to level 40…I mean I have a social life so I hope I don’t get that high…Then again I have only been playing it a week and up to level 13. If your into testing out a beta version of Platinum Life and want to live out your inner hip hop side check it out. Just try and battle me…

I think I am the last person on the planet that doesn’t have an iPhone and I have no idea what I am waiting for…Oh I know a day job:-). I asked all my iPhone friends if I could test the iSkin solo SE/ solo FX out on theirs and my friend Aziz from Cabana Networks kindly volunteered. Aziz also has an iPad so stay tuned for a review on the iPad and the accessories that I have been receiving.

The iSkin solo SE /solo FX is made from a material that looks and protects like a hard case however it feels like a soft case. The material was created to be heat and cold resistant, features shock and impact qualities, and cleans with ease (per the website). I quickly unboxed it and put it on his iPhone. Seemed easy enough and you can access all the ports which is great as some of the one’s I have seen you have to adjust the phone and case to access them. I also liked the look of the case and the brilliance of the colors. 

I then asked Aziz what he thought and he actually doesn’t use a case because unlike myself he isn’t hard on consumer goods. Plus unlike some of us women who just throw it in their purse items like this can sometimes catch while in a dude’s pockets due to the material.  This made me wonder if women use cases more then men due to the pocket factor.

I have yet to find Inner Earbuds that actually fit my freakishly small ear canals. I was skeptical when I got the Fauvette Faith, Hope and Love Inner Ear Retractable Earphones by chicBuds because I thought “Great more ear buds that won’t fit.” I loved the design though, on the retractable device it had the words Faith, Hope and Love…all things women should live by. (I have Faith the economy with get better, Hope that I get a day job soon and Love cutegeek . On the earbuds themselves they had I huge crystal covering the entire outside on each side. Who needs earrings when you have these little guys I asked myself!

I then unboxed the Fauvette Faith, Hope and Love Inner Ear Retractable Earphones and found 3 different silicon tip pads in different sizes of course. I tried the first two and (sad face) I was starting to get really bummed I couldn’t test these out like all the previous ones from before. Then I tested the last ones which seemed to be the smallest silicon tip pads I have ever seen! I quickly fit them on the buds and put the earbuds in my ear. EUREKA! They actually fit! Do you realize how happy I was?! The entire year while blogging for cutegeek I thought my ears were deformed! Talk about clearing up that complex!

I had to test them out on my run immediately so I left my condo and started walking to my running location. The entire walk I had a huge smile on my face! Yay they fit, there is nothing wrong with my ears I kept thinking! The bass was LOUD, in fact much louder then the Swarvoski chicbuds I tested. I can bump my Black Eyed Peas full blast to cancel all the sirens from the city…What a glorious day! I began my run which is pretty hard as it’s all hill work and jumping jacks. Not only did the Fauvette Faith, Hope and Love Inner Ear Retractable Earphones by chicBuds stay in the entire 45mins but unlike others I have tested my ears did not feel all wet and sweaty (I know that is gross but it’s true).

When I got home I emailed the folks at chicbuds about my experience and they told me that the Fauvette Faith, Hope and Love Inner Ear Retractable Earphones were the only ones on the market to date that are extra small. What luck! I got the only ones in the world that fit my ears! I do have to say that the retractable device still did bounce but the fact that they cleared up on earbud complex canceled that out. I wonder how many other girls have this issue? If you do you should get the Fauvette Faith, Hope and Love Inner Ear Retractable Earphones!

One day my un-boss/editor emailed me and said your going to get a box from a company called chicbuds. By now I realize I am the audio review cutegeek guru because I tend to keep getting speakers, ear buds, or headphones lately. So in a couple days my concierge emails me saying there is a package for me. I love mystery packages!! I ran down stairs and opened the box in the elevator like a kid on Christmas. Whoa! Pink Swarvoski ear buds and 4 more other fun products to test out from chicbuds. I got 3 different earbuds to test but my favorite ones were the ones with Swarvoski pink crystals in white that matched my shuffle (stay tuned for the other 2 earbud reviews as they are a different earbud styles). Initially I was thinking great I know these will fall off in a matter of days because we all know I am harsh on consumer goods. However like a girly geek I love Swarvoski and use to go window shopping there…when I had a day job that is.

What I liked about these chicbuds besides the Swarovoski crystals was that they fit my ears so I didn’t have to any earbud trauma like I do the silicon padded ones. Also being the feisty cancer that I am I will throw a fit when my wires get tangled. They come with a 3.5 mm jack so perfect for your iPhone, Smart phone, MP3 players and PCs. They also come with a retractable feature that eliminates (my) tangle drama. The crystals come in Blueberry, Grape, Watermelon, Sour Apple and Marshmallow and the headsets either come in white or black, perfect for every girls personalization.

As you can see in the picture (after I un-boxed them) the crystals are on the earbuds themselves and also on the retractable device. I have to be honest I kind of messed up at first and just pulled one side of the cords. Duh Nina, next time read the instructions (though I think its hilarious I had to read instructions for earbuds). Once I figured out to use them I was on my way to walk around the city.

I walk out my condo to torrential rain and wind…(dang it) but this is a good test to see if the Swarovski rhinestones holds up to water and earbuds hold up to the wind. I am happy to report after walking 2 hours in the rain they held up to the Nina challenge. I would like to point out it is rare for products to hold up to my consumer needs so great job chicbuds!

One thing I need to communicate to our readers is that the chicbuds sound quality is great however it’s just not the loud bass I am used to (though I have been told I listen to my earbuds way to loud). Also if you’re a runner like I pretend to be the retractable device bounces just a tad (not enough to detour me from wearing them but enough for me to notice). To be fair though I know I looked cute running with them and a few folks commented and checked them out…haha free publicity for the chicbuds. The chicbuds retail for $39.00 & recommend these for all my fashionista girls out. As you all know I take a ton of pictures and video’s for cutegeek. I had seen the Joby Gorillapod before and was jealous of the owner; it is one of my favorite products right now! I received a cute pink one to test out and quickly began playing around with it.

I then tested the Joby Gorillapod out on my family. I have to admit I am lucky to have friends and family that let me test things out on them. We took a road trip to the Jelly Belly factory and to Napa and while my husband was driving I set up the Joby Gorillapod and took a picture of us in motion.  

I then let my nieces take some pictures with the Joby Gorillapod on the table. Aren’t they cutie pies?

When I got this Hyperkin Baseball bat set in the mail I got flashbacks of how bad I was as a child playing softball. Fortunately with my Wii Sports I rock at it and there are no balls flying towards my face (I have received a black eye from playing Lacrosse in college).

I recently received the ScanSnap S1300 and did the unboxing video here!  I had a funny visual moment when I read that it was portable. I had a vision of someone walking around with a Netbook and the ScanSnap S1300 in downtown San Francisco on Market street computing and scanning.  I do realize that is not what it’s meant for though my mental visual made me laugh! The ScanSnap S1300 is made for business people on the go who need a quick scanner, portable users (I bet this could even work on a plane though I didn’t get to fly and test it) or for those who have a small work space and need a scanner. What I found intriguing when I did the unboxing is that you can power it via USB for the ultimate portable experience. Nice! I loved that it was very light in weight and realized why its made for folks on the go.

I quickly downloaded the ScanSnap S1300 software for the product which by no means took long at all and started scanning. I kind of put it to the test by scanning a very thick card board flyer and it worked! I scanned my cutegeek business card as well and though it was slanted going in it scanned straight.

With the ScanSnap S1300 software you can Scan to ScansSnap Organizer, to Cardminder, to a folder, to email, to print, to word, to Excel, to Power Point, or to Word.  The ScanSnap S1300 can convert scanned data into searchable PDF files AND users can use a colored highlighter on a black & white document to create searchable keywords. Sweet! I always need a search feature.  Also this works with PCs and Macs.

While sitting at home wondering what my day will bring I got the Hyperkin Golf set product in the mail (I think my UPS man comes to my condo more that anyone else!).  When I got them initially I was excited because the Golf set was in pink!  I love my Wii because it makes me feel like I can actually play golf, baseball or bowl.

I have to be honest I was a bit out of it when doing the unboxing and couldn’t figure out how to attach my Wii control to the clubs. I finally figured it out. Check out my goofy unboxing here! Once I connected them I put on my Wii and tried them out. THEY WERE AWESOME! I loved that I could hear them hit the golf ball and how it felt like I was actually using a club. I also tried it on Wii Fit to practice my Wii swing and it was just as easy and fun to use (plus I got a work out). I received an email about trying out the www.shapeways.com website. I didn’t know what to expect as I had never heard Shapeways before. With Shapeways you can upload a 3D image you created, download their software, create it and within 10-14 business days you will receive your printed 3D product. They also have models that you can purchase as well if you don’t have a 3D image. Eventually I created a 3D cutegeek rubber stamp and an stylist with my initials (the minimum purchase is $25.00). I have yet to receive my products as I just created them but I am anxious to get them in the mail! And the best part…wait for it…free shipping!

 While I was at Macworld I had a chance to check out the Bone Collection’s products and the one the that stood out the to me was the USB Flash Drives. They had many shapes/ forms made from silicon material and they sent me samples for review of the Panda Bear, Mini iPhone (yes I had a Zoolander moments with it), Dinosaur (when I was a kid I was a huge nerd about Dinosaurs), and an elephant.

 In my creative humor we made a video of the flash drives; see the youtube here. One has to wonder what is going on in my head half the time…

Bone Collections sent me their Phone Leather 3GS Case for the iPhone recently. Have you ever been the last person on the planet to adapt to a gadget (which is rare for me)?! Admittedly I do not have an iPhone as I prefer to click actual buttons…crazy I know but I have shaky hands and it would take my friends days to decode my texts using an iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, I think the iPhone is an AMAZING product and endorse it to everyone plus the applications are phenomenal.

Fortunately I knew someone who owned one; my great pal Mel. She invited me over to make calzones with her (yes this cutegeek can also cook); I realized this is the perfect time to test this iPhone Leather 3GS case out. She currently owns a hard case which after she took it off realized it was scratching her brand new iPhone. I opened up the box for the Phone Leather 3GS case and since it’s a simple silicon case we slipped it on in no time.

I asked her what she thought and her first test was if you could access the 3.5mm audio jack since with her hard case she has to mess with it until it finally plugs in (that would annoy me BTW). With the Bone Leather Case  it was indeed easier for her to access it. She then tested the button functionality and how the case affects her usability of the iPhone functions. They worked great…She only had one complaint and it was not a big deal but the volume switch was harder to access then with her current hard case (volume buttons worked great I might add).

All and all she liked the product and thought the leather was awesome. I also think this product is much easier to use then a hard case and more stylish for your iPhone. Also I love that this product is 100% Bio-degradable!!! Cheers to you Bone!

It’s time to put on your creative thinking hats on and start thinking about a video game concept for Nexon. Check out the press release below and good luck cutegeeks!

Nexon America today has launched “The Nexon iNitiative,” an ambitious new program that will provide up to $1 million to support the next generation of game developers.  The most original, unique and promising independent gaming projects will be sponsored, co-developed and later published through Nexon’s global distribution network which services games in more than 71 countries.
 
The Nexon iNitiative is now accepting game ideas through its dedicated Web site: http://initiative.nexon.net.

 
Game developers selected by The Nexon iNitiative program will earn a share of the $1 million to support the game’s development as well as a chance at a Nexon publishing contract. The Nexon iNitiative finalists will be selected and contacted by June, 2010.
 
“Nexon is all about great games and The Nexon iNitiative is about finding the next generation of great game developers,” said Won Il Sue, Nexon America’s vice president of business development. “It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’ve got a great idea, we want to hear from you. We’re ready to fund, develop and publish the best of the best through our massive worldwide network. The Nexon iNitiative is looking for potential PC-based games that have broad appeal and encourage community and social interaction. Flash, client-based games or ports from other platforms are welcome. Games with strong online elements will get serious consideration, but no good idea will be turned away.
 
The Nexon iNitiative Website (http://initiative.nexon.net) is now open and will begin taking game submissions immediately.  Members of the Nexon America business development staff will be available at the Game Developer’s Conference in conference room 220 on March 10, 11 and 12 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

I went to the Plastiki press event in Sausalito last Friday. I was truly intrigued by their initiative to sail a boat made with recycled plastic bottles and how they would power their technology so we could track them on their journey to Sydney using  HP products.  The room was jam packed with media internationally plus local San Francisco press. Mayor Gavin Newsom walked on stage and introduced the crew lead by David de Rothschild’s vision.

Though we talk mostly about technology on cutegeek I wanted to highlight some ecological information learned from the press conference. As you all may know 72% of our planet is water but did you know that there is a Great Pacific Garbage Patch that is twice the size of Texas in our ocean (and approximately 1000 miles off the California coast). That is the size of almost a continent! Seriously?! Furthermore approximately 80% of the rubbish found in the ocean is plastic. My jaw dropped as I had no idea why we had done this to our planet (note: I recycle daily and since living in San Francisco I do not buy bottled water). Also for all those San Francisco tax payers, you should know that after not buying plastic bags and bottles over the past year we saved tax payers close to 1 million dollars. 

At the press event I attended, adventure Ecology founder/ environmentalist David de Rothschild unvelied the Plastiki. It’s a 60ft catamaran made from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and srPET: a fully recyclable material (quoted from the press kit). The crew is awaiting anxiously for their window of opportunity (due to poor weather in the Bay area) to embark on an adventure taking them 11,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. They will also post daily (as long as they get signals) their adventure on the high seas on their website and also using their twitter plus other social media. Below is a picture of the crew taking a quick photo op with 2 kids (that will not be on the Plastiki). I also have a youtube of the Plastiki here; the sound quality is not so great due to the high winds and rain (you gotta love San Francisco winters).

 I realize I need to elaborate on what HP technology the crew will be using while on their voyage to Sidney (San Francisco’s sister city). The crew members will be using the HP Elitebook 2530p, HP Probook 5310m, HP Pocket and Personal Drive, and HP Ipaq 910c business messenger. My first question is how they will be able to post especially in areas when their is no coverage. They are using satellite technology from Fleetbroadband by Inmarsat which apparently is the first maritime communications service to provide broadband data and voice (through a compact antenna on a global basis). From what I understand they will be using solar panels and the windmill to keep the systems powered.

I actually had the chance to get on the Plastiki while in the bay. At first I thought I was pretty cool to experience this till several developments happened…It was raining (and hard), winds were high and I had to first take a zodiac (a little inflatable boat with a motor) out to the boat just to get onboard. What the heck did I sign myself up for?!  While I sang to myself the Gilligan’s island “A three hour tour,” I was wondering seriously my life insurance should have been up’d. I was freaking out; besides the rain the winds were high and let’s face it I had some girly flats that slipped all over the place. When we got to the boat I stood there in amazement but also scared (probably should’ve considered the weather…if I had known it was going to rain cats and dogs).

On the Plastiki I feared for my life as I am not so great on small boats (my jetski and I never got along). I actually started to look for an Ark and animals lining up 2 by 2 as the rain picked up. After getting onboard I had a nice gentleman (that realized I am no sailor) help me and let me grab on to him for dear life (lucky guy since he must have been 20 years older then I). When I first got on the boat I had the chance (again shaking in fear) to check out the 2 bikes onboard that they will use to power the boat through the pacific if there are low winds.

I had the opportunity to check out the cabin and I had my first question…um where is the bathroom for the crew? Since I was freaking out due to the weather I didn’t ask much but I am still curious where is the bathroom for the crew? Per my photo’s there are (obviously) limited beds and cabin space which makes me assume that they will be taking shifts to make this expedition happen. They had a nice mini navigation/technology desk with the  HP notebooks and the kitchen though small was admiral as I know on this boat they have small storage. Below are some pictures from the cabin. I admire the crew because after being on the boat in a storm their journey and passion is AMAZING (plus BOLD).

I love event planning! As part of my small business and social commitee duties for my building I plan meetings and events. I wanted a website that I could create an easy URL that folks could remember off the flyers in my elevators for our building social events (not some random numbers/ letters that no one could ever recall). I found this website recently called www.eventbrite.com.  Unlike evite on this website you get a URL that is personalized, sell tickets for your event (if you want), and upload all the important event information/pictures for your guest. It’s pretty simple to use as you just put in all the important information for your event and what type of URL address you want. As a user you also can create a color scheme, post to various social medias, create headers and footers, and truly personalize it to your event. Below is a Mock up event I created for you all to see how easy and simple it is to use plus the URL to check out my fake event :-) http://cutegeek.eventbrite.com/

Hi everyone!

My name is Daron and I’m new in town, so I wanted to introduce myself and tell you some of the things you can expect from my posts.

Like Radiris, I’m a 2007 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. I studied Chemical & Biomedical engineering with a little of this and a little of that in between. I grew up in Philly and now live with my 2 cats (altho I’m MUCH more a dog person!) outside of the city, with part-time weekend residence in NYC. I am just making the transition from engineer to project manager in the medical device industry…so you cant actually buy any of the products I have helped design, but if you ever find yourself on an operating table? They are the best!

I’m big into working out and really getting into cycling – just got a road bike for Xmas and am LOVING spin class. I scuba dive, sky dive, watch lots of movies and read lots of books (maybe a NOOK to review in the future???). I’m just getting into photography (so watch out for my thoughts on cameras!) and LOOOOVE to eat (esp Indian, Ethiopian, Thai & Italian…oh yeah and Dim Sum!)

I obsessively check my email on my cell, Facebook stalk and look things up on IMDB or Wikipedia. I’m a little bit of a know-it-all…but aren’t we all, really?

I cant live without my cell phone and an iPod. My iPod touch and GPS were stolen out of my car the week of Christmas and I have yet to replace them. My cell is also outdated, so look for lots of posts about my deliberation over my phone. My HP Pavilion dv2047 has been put through the grinder and I’ll prob be replacing that soon too (HP wanna help a girl out??).

I love medicine and science, so look out for posts on some of the breakthroughs in the medical community. I have a BlueAnt headset coming soon, so I’m excited to let you all know how it goes.

The great people at Harmonix and MTV games recently sent me the Beatles Rockband game (instruments sold separately) to test out (THANKS GUYS!!) for my CES/Holidays round up of products to review.  When I first found out that they were sending me Beatles Rockband I was overjoyed and jumping around my condo like a kid in a candy store.  

 I played it twice at E3 but frankly I wanted to play all the songs and see how I would progress in the game as I became better. I kept wondering what cool things could I unlock with my mad Rockband skills.  I also recently hooked up my microphone stand next to my drums (Phil Colins style) so I could sing and play.  One would think I am taking Beatles Rockband to another level by doing this but actually I saw on the Beatles Rockband Stage at E3 and have been dying to get to a level where I could sing and play at the same time. 

This game is truly for all ages especially those who love the Beatles (which I do) and believe it can be a great bonding experience between grandparents, parents and kids. If your into Rockband like I obviously am it’s the perfect gift. I actually have visions of parents waiting till their kids are asleep to play the game themselves; like my parents did.

The introduction to the game was phenomenal and quite a visual trip! At first we did a couple rounds of the quick play as our typical Rockband band. The neat thing about this game is that you can harmonize with up to 3 singers, play 2 different guitars (bass and electric), and of course the drums. This gave this game a whole new aspect; more challenging and engaging more people to participate in the game all at once. See the screen shot below of what it would look like if you played the game.

We had some friends over fo my pal Mel’s birthday and we all had a chance to play Beatles Rockband as a real band (instead of the puny band of just my husband and I).  First we got all the girls together to see how well we could do and show the boys whats up! I have to admit Mel, Lauren, Colleen and I rocked it and all had a chance to try different instruments. Check us out!

We then let the boys join; I guess that is fair right? Everyone had a blast; I have to be honest Rockband can get old at parties but not the Beatles! One of my guy pals, Jeff, decided to really play the game instead of quick play and went through the “story” portion. What was neat about that portion is if you do well you win video clips and photo’s of the Beatles. That made me a tad fanatical and had to play all the chapters of the story which sadly meant I had completed the game. For those that make it to the end of the game there is a nice surprise that I will not spoil; just realize you have to go through all the ending credits (and there is allot)!

So gather up all your gift cards from the holidays and get Beatles Rockband. This by far is one of my favorite games currently and believe its definately a 5 star experience…if only I had the special drum set.  Stay tuned for a seperate post of all our youtubes of playing Beatles Rockband (be warned there is hours and hours of videos).

As all you cutegeek fans know we are giving away this cool product named the Olive Opus 4 Hi-FI Music Server.  I received a Olive Opus 4 Hi Fi Music Server eval unit so I could let you all know what you may have a chance to win. See my youtube unboxing here. 

 The set up for the Olive Opus 4 Hi Fi Music Server was pretty simple; plug in AC adaptor, connect your speakers and screw in antenna for wireless connection.  As soon as I turned it on I played with the touch screen. I just love touch screens and think every product should have one!  I also loved that the color LCD touch screen was just large enough (4.3″ wide aspect ratio and 480 x 272 pixels) to navigate through all the functions (plus I am blind as a bat so it was a nice display).

Once powered up and you set up your wireless connection you have 4 options to choose from: Music Library, Music Sources, Internet Radio, and Settings (besides inserting a CD and listening to it directly).   Automatically I had access to several internetstations. Unfortunately I have a slow wireless connection in my condo (internet service shall remain nameless for I do not want it to get worse, LOL) so I was not able to get ALL the channels.  However, it was a great selection of channels especially my fav…hip hop (Def Jams was my favorite channel to date)! 

I then tested out connecting to several PCs in my home wirelessly and was able to access all of them.  It was nice to access music from the different technology devices in my condo using The Olive Opus 4 Hi Fi Music Server. Next I inserted a CD and once it was inserted the CD’s artist and album name appeared on the screen (John Legend because he is awesome) along with playing and importing options. I chose to import the CD to see how long it took and how it worked. With a quick click my CD started to import and also had a cool import status option so you can see how long it will take. See picture below.

After importing the CD was complete I had to test it out (also a great reason to play my man John Legend extra loud). It was pretty simple from the main screen you just select music library and the album you want to listen to and SHAZZAM the music began. The sound quality was amazing; they weren’t joking about comparing it to Hi Fi sound.

If I had more time to play with this server I would have a dowload party to test out how many of my CD’s I could store on the hard drive. However that may have taken months for me!  All in all the Olive Opus 4 Hi Fi Music Server is a neat product and I am excited one of our fans will win it! It’s rare now-a-days I stumble upon a website and think that it’s pretty cool. I recently found out about this unique website called Ustream.tv and had to check it out.  Ustream is a live interactive video broadcast website that allows anyone with a camera and internet to broadcast to a worldwide audience.  The website was originally started by 2 US Army Officers that wanted to find a way for soldiers to interact live with all their loved ones all at the same time.  In 2006 Ustream was born and an instant hit with public figures and celebrities.  Some of Ustreams users that are in the public eye (to name are few) are Obama, Hilary Clinton, Ashton Kutcher, Diddy, and many more (not to mention cutegeek)!  

I have to admit once I heard about this I was pumped!  My parents, siblings, and in-laws back in Texas have web-cams; what took me so long to find Ustream?  I also realized I HAD to tell my cousin who recently got deployed to Iraq about this! Imagine how awesome that would be for us family members to keep in touch with her while she is over there (till 2011 I might add)!

It takes roughly 2 minutes to set up an account per the website so I tested that out first.  It asks for allot of information and frankly it took me 30 seconds longer as I had no idea on cutegeeks Twitter and Facebook URLs.  As soon as I set our account up I made my way to my dashboard.  Here is what it looks like when you first reach your dashboard.

Immediately I wanted to test “the create a show” option and set it up giving it a name, cutegeek logo, category, content of the broadcast or recording, and tags (we must not forget how important those tags are).  You can then create a design for your show, create off air clips for when you are not broadcasting, stream media, schedule your show and see your shows matrix.  After I set it all up I had our own little cutegeek channel on ustream.  I named our first channel cutegeek review and previewed our channel (in pink for cutegeek.com of course). Here is a screen shot of our channel. from the users perspective.

Now it was time to test out the recording and/broadcasting feature.  I used my Dell XPS 1330 notebook with integrated camera and began to record off air (since I had no followers yet). All you do is hit broadcast now and it directs you to the recording/ broadcasting window.  Readers please note you have to allow ustreamaccess to your camera in order to broadcast; at first I denyed it and realized you have to accept it! In the first video on the cutegeek review channel you will see I am just testing it to see how it looks and works.  All you do is hit record, do your broadcast and then preview it to make sure it look good.  You can also edit it after you are done broadcasting it.

My next mission is to get more followers through our facebook page and twitter. After I entered the information I had to wait a while for it to post to my accounts. I got ancy out of excitement and ended up just posting it myself out of excitement for this new site.

On Ustream you can broadcast live and have your audience interact (even have a co-host); record off air and post, show slide shows, and use your mobile device to view, record, broadcast and send updates to Twitter, Facebook, Ustream and YouTube. Its a pretty cool website and I plan to do a live broadcast of me playing the new Beatles Rockband I just received plus future unboxing of new products.  Check it out cutegeek fans and become followers here!

I was itching for new products to review.  I know it’s been a while since I have posted a review on cutegeek.com and it was about time to get back in the game (especially with the holidays and CES fast approaching).

The first product I got in the mail was some JBL Duet II speakers.  If someone told me 10 years ago I would be excited about getting a speakers shipment I would not believe them…Yet I was excited when I got the JBL Duet II multimedia two piece speaker system package (also bummed I would HAVE to return them). 

The package was rather small and very light weight for speakers.  At first I thought…damn I got my neighbors package instead of a new toy to test out. I am not going to lie, I questioned if I open it (I honestly would never have but sometimes the thought of being a rebel is thrilling).  Then in a rather ingenious (not really) moment I looked down on the label and realized…oh wait IT IS addressed to me. NICE!

I set up my Sony HD Webbie and got ready to un-box and record my new little speakers (that again I have to return in a week…you know it does sting a little every time). I also set up my coffee table with my shuffle, Mac, and PC so I could test them immediately after the un-boxing.  See full un-boxing youtube here.

So what’s the skinny on the speakers Nina?  For starters they are 10 inches in height and 4 inches in diameter.  The frequency response is 80Hz- 20Hz, input impedance is 3k Ohms, and signal-to-noise ratio is 60dB.  They are compatible with Macs, PCs, MP3 devices and any devices with a 3.5mm audio jack.  The power and volume control are located on the top of one of the speakers (don’t forget to turn them on!)

They have a black and silver exterior and the set up was pretty simple.  Basically plug one JBL speaker into the other; plug the main component into your device and plug in the power adaptor.  DONE!  Frankly that is the way speakers should be; easy to use and simple to install. 

I tried it first on my PC and BAMMO I was jammin’ out (and possibly dancing around my condo); they were pretty loud considering their size.  I didn’t know what to expect when I did the un-boxing but I was pleasantly surprised! These bad boys were pretty loud and in fact I almost had to turn them down…I said ALMOST!

Next I tested them out on the Mac; again just by simply plugging them into the 3.5mm audio jack.  Success!  They sounded just as great as they did on the PC!  Now was the test; I busted out my lil’ pink shuffle and plugged it in.  I realize that it’s simply a shuffle and does not have the same amount of power as a PC but there was a huge difference in sound.  It sounded great do not get me wrong but not nearly as powerful as when it was plugged into the Mac or PC.

For their price point of around $99.00 USD I believe the JBL Duet II Speaker System is a great deal; just don’t expect them to sound the same with smaller and less power devices.  They are small in size and light weight; perfect for a portable system.

Greetings! My name is Maya, and I am a super geek.  I’m not sure that you would be able to tell immediately that this is the case– I look and act normal (…uh, I’ve been told) and I don’t have a CS degree or a technical background. But here it is, in one sentence (with a colon, because I never do things the simple way)–

I consider it pant-worthy when Apple unveils some new ultra-cool device after letting the public speculate themselves into the ground for many months. I consider internet people to be celebrities– once, Steve Jobs rode past me on a bicycle as I waited to cross the street after lunch in Palo Alto (along with two bodyguards). I nearly got hit by a car whipping my phone out to Twitter about it as fast as I could. My news comes from my favorite podcasts and blog networks. Oh, and Twitter, of course. Television newscasts, you ask? What is this, the 20th century?

One of my favorite things to do is go to the retail stores where new gadgets are sold and play with them. Try before you buy type of deal. Last weekend, I was at Sprint playing with the Pre and inquiring about when the Pixie gets store bound. The week before that, I was fiddling with test videos on the new nano in the Apple Store. I once made an unboxing video when I got a Kindle 2, but didn’t want to put it up until I got my own blog more prettified– the vanity!

I am all about social media, gizmos and gadgetry, and the latest internet memes. I love to write and I could read all day, whether it be on a screen or in a book.  I could probably write you a whole essay in LOLspeak.  And still, there’s so much to explore and discover!

So! When I met Radiris at work, the first thing I did after shaking her hand was Google her. And that’s when I discovered my long lost twin (or, geek sister, at least…we should start a sorority.) She was a geek too! We speak the same language (when I keep it english, and not internet meme-ish.)

So when she asked me to write for the site,

Are you kidding? Do I even need to finish that sentence?

I just hope I do the blog justice, in the name of lady geeks everywhere. A-men!

So I open my inbox and my jaw just drops…How the did I get up to 171 emails in my inbox?  The shock later turned to joy as I see MTV and Harmonix have been busy on new releases for Rockband!   Foreigner, Vans warped tour, Offspring, Pearl Jam and many more all released or being released by end of month.  Check out all  the press releases here.  Enjoy!

I received the HP Photosmart A826  and frankly I was curious; it was so light weight…what could it be?!  Taa- Daa!  A PRINTER!!!  Now photo printers are like Christmas to me b/c I love taking pics and making cards. 

When I unboxed the product (see super cheesy unboxing*) I immediately starting singing “Meet George Jetson…dododododododo…his boy Elroy…daughter Judy.”  The product seemed very futuristic with nice lines and a 7 inch TOUCH SCREEN!  I am in love with touch screens so anything with this feature makes me happy!

Installation was pretty quick, in fact I just plugged it in at first not using my PC but my SD card.  I first printed a photo; it came out flawless (it can print Black: up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, Color: Up to 4800 x 1200 dpi). Who needs to go to the store when you have it right there in your own home; was my initial reaction!

I then used the creative feature; you can make a text caption on any photo in several different colors and fonts.  Other features include red eye removal, personlize greeting cards (with 200 border/ design choices) plus slim/enhance images. All of this was within the printer interface itself; not even using a PC! Thats right kids, no PC needed to edit and create your photos! I admit I had fun with it!

This product is made to preview, personalize and print photos…and I had fun doing so! Also it doubles as a slide show. My one complaint is that its a tad bulky…though very cool to look at and play with I had a hard time displaying this product in my home.   Its so cute but in a small condo with Texas sized furniture, I could not find a place to display it.

This product is perfect for someone like my sister in law who scrapbooks or like my Aunt Cathy who was born with a camera her hand!  It prints up to 150 photo’s per ink cartridge.  Also I think this printer is PERFECT for kids; the design is attractive and cool all at the same time!  This product was so easy to use my dog had to try it out…

I think this printer is a bargain at 199.00 especially for not needing a PC to edit and create. Cheers to you HP! 

*Note: I made an error in the youtube video about the OS. The printer can support Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit), Microsoft Windows XP,Microsoft Windows XP x64, Microsoft Windows 2000, Mac OS X, and Linux.

As everyone knows who reads this blog (um anyone?!) my PC has been on the decline as posted this week. Well yesterday after pounding away for my day job my PC froze. Now this happens about 5 times a day but this time after several reboots alas it’s on its last leg. As of now my pc is running as though it’s a turtle on muscle relaxers…and I am now regretting my little minor fit I threw at CES but we can’t go back in time!

All of my friends are telling me to get an Apple Mac; small problem I have never even used an Apple unless the Oregon trail game counts from elementary school in the mid 80′s. So I am wondering how much time will I spend looking at it baffled and confused. I then have had several folks reccommend HP DV2 which is also cool but I work more then 10 hours on my PC and I am blind (try 100 x 100 vision) so I need something bigger then 13 inches and smaller then 15 inches. Ironically only one person has told me to get a Dell or a Lenovo; with so many different brands out there the most reccommended are Apple and HP.

Basically I am still clueless on what to get…HELP geeks and cutegeeks!  So EVERYONE Vote by clicking on the Vote button!

I am a hot mess without my PC:-(

A pal of mine asked me to try out Spinvox and immediately I was attracted to the features of this service. Spinvox is a great service you can get on your cell/ smart phone and it converts all voicemails into texts. It then can convert it into email, blogs, walls or space. Convenience is imperative and also needed when running your own small business. I work from home and my phone does get used for emailing and conf. calls; this service is amazing! I am in love with Spinvox!

First off who has time to spend 2 hours listening to voice mails these days?! How great is it to get a text of your missed voicemail/ call?! Second is that you can use this with Skype which I use pretty often, especially for international calls (or my podcast). Lastly in the very near future you will be able to get your texts while flying.

I cannot express what a great service Spinvox provides, it honestly makes me wonder…who needs voicemail when you can have Spinvox?! I love you Spinvox.

I recently received the Hauppauge HD PVR- Personal HDTV Recorder and had the privilege of un-boxing it. First off it was a very clean and simple for what seemed to be a complicated product for myself. The product is pretty small and light weight at 1 lb, 3 oz and 19.8cm wide x 17.3 cm deep x 7 cm high.

The small form factor makes it something that can be easily hidden for those who hate showing electronics out in the open, and I am one of those people.

When I unboxed the Hauppauge HD PVR- Personal HDTV Recorder I made an unboxing video with my Sony Webbie HD.

After I unboxed it, I began to set it up. The set up was not as hard as I thought it would be, although the first time I did mix up the cables by mistake. I swear some of the colors looked the same!? Or maybe I am going colorblind!   However once I got the colors sorted out and plugged the cables in correctly it was easy goings from there. 

After setting it up the first thing I did was record a movie in high-definition (HD).  Afterall it is an HD PVR. I was worried the process would be hard and confusing but it was simple and before I knew it I had a copy of a movie on my harddrive in High Def with a picture quality that was flawless!

I then loaded the Titan TV guide and it was simple and straight forward, once you set up an account with Titan TV (great another p/w to remember). With Titan TV, you are able to view your cable provider’s program guide, record shows remotely via pc or mobile device from any location in the world.

With the Hauppauge HD PVR you can record HD TV to your PC in 1080i resolution using the Hauppauge H.264 hardware compression.

This product worked perfectly and truly I have no complaints. I could see this product useful for someone who doesn’t want to spend money on TiVo or Sat/Cable DVR service, it is also great for people like my husband who travel a lot and might have forgotten to record an upcoming reality show, with the Titan TV service he can, even when he isn’t at home.

Unfortunately though, with me working from home and having and DVR service included with my Cable Television service, I do not have use for it. HOWEVER, as I mention before, this product is perfect for someone who doesn’t have TiVo or DVR or a frequent traveler who needs more time to catch up their favorite shows!

Since the beginning of time, or high school (same thing right…) I always told people I was a nerd. It wasn’t cool back then so I was taking a big risk, but I didn’t care, because I knew (yes, I’m admitting that I think I’m cute) that I could push those limits. I often received the ‘you don’t look like a nerd’ comment – and then I would ask, ‘well what does a nerd look like?’ – no answer…There weren’t nerdy trends back then, at least any people would actually want to follow.

When people thought of nerds they thought of Revenge of the Nerds – huge plastic framed glasses, huge bookbags, wimps, nose picking (hence the pic on the side…haha), etc. I had no other way of telling people that I was a really intelligent female, and that I loved school, loved to read, and was a sponge when it came to learning. What I did decide to do, which has now sort of become my trademark, is wear the huge plastic framed glasses…I always thought they looked nerdy and that’s what intrigued me to always, and continually buy them…I’ll show you pics another time of the many glasses I’ve had…

(I do career days at inner city schools and you have to see the look on the children’s faces when I tell them I’m a nerd…they’re like na…and then by the end of my lil’ speech, I tell the class and all of the nerds to be confident – to say that they’re nerds loud and proud. I asked one class to look around at the nerds in the class, and at first it was like ‘huh – why’ and then I said because you’ll most likely be working for them in the future. Its oh so true, sometimes we need a rude awakening, even at an early age – its okay to be smart damnit!)

Thanks to celebrities and the media, being a nerd is now a sense of style. Wearing suspenders, huge funky glasses, super tight clothes and just clothes that sort of seems awkward (work together) is now the thing to do. I am far from being a fashionista, I shop sales and wear tons of black, but if I can help bring those nerdy trends to all of ya’ll – I’ll try my best – trust me I will J

In high school, while everyone was living the advertised life (I went to school in the Bronx, NYC) – buying and wearing $150 pair of sneakers, and only focusing on their appearance, I actually invested in my education because the one thing I learned is that education is one thing that doesn’t go out of style. Times can change, people can come in and out of your life, you can lose a couple of things along the way but the one thing people can’t take from you is your education, the degrees under your belt and your knowledge – it never goes out of style either! It’s like a win, win situation, so why not try to get more of it.

I am so happy that it is now ‘cool’ to the world to be smart. It’s cool to be a nerd, a geek, a whatever – it’s great. You should never hide your true colors and if you feel a certain way, then go for it, and show them off…you never know when the tables will turn and when ‘you’ will become the new ‘in’ thing. I’m not saying you should wait for a big break, because who would’ve thought being a geek was cool…but look at it now. When you hear cute geek, you should no longer think of that being an oxymoron – there are many, many, many attractive, intelligent people in the world, and all the negative connotions associated with ‘geek’ will be disproven on Mythbusters if it were up to me.

Geeks are just as hot as anyone else – can I get an AMEN! If you’re a geek, you better walk tall and proud – it’s a revolution.

When someone doubts your geekiness/nerdiness give them one of these – my ‘are you serious/oh, I don’t look like a geek to you?’ face. Then quickly switch into the ‘whatever’ face – that’s what we should all do to folks when they tell us we don’t look ‘nerdy’, ‘smart’, or ‘geeky’ F that….
