This week on the Girls Out Loud show, Maya and Cristina discuss that whopping $50B Facebook valuation due to the new Goldman Sachs investment. Somehow it evolves into a discussion about Facebook ads, something Maya works with every day. Needless to say, there could be some improvements made. We then discuss the Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Vegas to see if it’s really as great as it once was. Brand new Apple iPad 2 casing was shown off at the event which seems to be the only highlight we could spot. The Mac App Store was released this week to many awaiting fans, some of whom were disappointed in the new model for desktop software. Take a listen and enjoy the show! Continue Reading…

The AOC e2237Fwh: A Monitor with Style
by Cristina Cordova on November 21st, 2010

While the AOC e2237Fwh doesn’t have the best name, it’s certainly a pretty alternative to most of the monitors on the market today. The front of the monitor has a clear plastic border and on the whole, the monitor is remarkably thin. It’s held up by a circular foot stand that had me worried about stability at first. It’s a pretty small stand for a 22” monitor, but it held up and never toppled over.
As for the picture, the monitor did have the slight blue-green tint common with many monitors these days, but it wasn’t too noticeable. I used the eco settings so that the brightness of the screen adjusted to my office and home settings in the morning at night. I used the monitor with both DVI and VGA cables and they worked equally well. The monitor has a great resolution at 1920×1080 Full HD, which was the same resolution I had on my current 24” monitor.

Girls Out Loud Episode 19: Where We’re Pretty Much Unsurprised…
by Cristina Cordova on November 18th, 2010
This week on Girls Out Loud, Maya and Cristina scratch their heads over the relative NON-news of the weeks biggest announcements from Facebook (Messaging) and Apple (the Beatles…seriously.) Also, both ladies are not surprised that cable subscribers are increasingly “cutting the cord,” the new iPhone app Path seems kind of lame, and that the arrival of Twitter analytics seems like it will put a lot of third party apps out of business. Also, we have a special treat! Cristina explains why the Pulse app went free, after all their press this past Monday for doing so.
Cuttin the (cable) cord: We’re doin it!
The completely lackluster Apple iTunes Beatles announcement (Biiiiiiig whoop.)
Facebook Messaging…(so, what is it?)
Path…the app we’re not quite getting…

Girls Out Loud Episode 17: Incentives and Topless Female Inequality
by Cristina Cordova on November 4th, 2010
In Episode 17, Maya and Cristina explore the difficult question of male and female equality, at least as it relates to a proposition passed in Massachusetts to legalize the ability for women to walk around outside, topless, as men do. Additionally fascinating topics are the not so new and hardly revolutionary holographic developments, Google’s mistakes both in products and in management structures, Facebook’s latest product release (per usual) and Peter Thiel funding research about immortality. A great week for dorky news! Continue Reading…
Girls Out Loud Episode 16: Where Farmville Makes us Depressed and Tongue Tied
by Cristina Cordova on October 29th, 2010
This week on Girls Out Loud, Maya and Cristina marvel over several things in both positive and negative ways; we marvel positively that Google is offering personal servants as a perk to its employees, about some awesome apps in GoogleTV, and what big news Facebook Places Deals are, if they are real. Some very un-positive marveling comes at the mention of the horrifying story of the Zynga obsessed young mom who killed her baby for interrupting Farmville, and Digg’s ironic use of its own platform to fake-Digg news items. Girls Out Loud Episode 15: Twitter Infamy and No Money Back Guarantees
by Cristina Cordova on October 20th, 2010
In Episode 15, Maya and Cristina discuss the earnings calls of the largest public tech companies including Google, Yahoo and most interestingly, Apple. While Steve Jobs contributed to the never-ending Google-Apple pissing match, the Apple stock suffered by consequence. The girls also discuss their never-ending Facebook obsession with the latest privacy breach and our endless Twitter shouts that seem to go ignored. In addition, we discuss the legal market and one student’s quest to get a refund for a degree that is not about to pay dividends.

Girls Out Loud Episode 14: Self-Driven, Promiscuous Cars with Sensors
by Cristina Cordova on October 14th, 2010
In Episode 14, Maya and Cristina get caught up in the wonders of the amazing technological advances being made daily by the smartest folks on earth, including Google and the development and reveal of self-driven cars (140,000 miles already driven, people!) and a world where everything was monitored by extremely sensitive sensors that would be aware of things…way before we could ever be. In addition, Cristina and Maya debate the implications of promiscuous Duke alumna Karen Owens faux-thesis, as well as discuss this weeks Facebook outlining of it’s Bing partnership. Continue Reading…
Girls Out Loud Show Episode 12: Oh, the Ranting!
by Cristina Cordova on September 23rd, 2010
Episode 12 brought us to an ending with a hefty rant. Before we went wild, we talked about the super angel collusion madness reported by Techcrunch’s Michael Arrington along with Dave McClure and Fred Wilson’s responses. We then returned to a topic favorite, Facebook, to discuss the impending Facebook Phone and Zuckerberg’s $100M donation to New Jersey public schools. After discussing the Cuil failure, we finish off with a tirade on a University of Chicago Law School professor whining about having to live on $450K/year. Take a listen!

Review: HP SW450 Digital Camera
by Cristina Cordova on September 20th, 2010
This weekend I reviewed the HP SW450 Digital Camera. The HP camera features 12 megapixels and a 4X optical zoom. The SW450 included a blink detector, which would notify you if a person in the photo blinked and prompt you to retake it. There’s also a smile detector which will automatically take a photo when a subject is smiling.
The specs of the HP compare quite well to my current camera, the Nikon Coolpix S570 so I took a few photos with my Nikon and the HP camera to see which camera takes better quality photos. Both cameras were left on auto both times (mostly because I hate clicking extra settings buttons). Click to enlarge the photos for better inspection.
The NETGEAR Stora: A Hub for All of Your Media
by Cristina Cordova on August 30th, 2010
When I think of NETGEAR, I usually think of storage for IT professionals and businesses, not for the average home. The NETGEAR Stora is specifically made home users to store music, movies, photos etc. and share that data in a web browser interface via your home network. I have A LOT of music – about 16 thousand songs and counting. I have them all stored on my MacBook Pro and on an external hard drive in the case of a hard drive fail. I don’t really need the storage aspect of the Stora, but what I do need is a way to play that music all over my apartment. If I have a party or just want to play music in my living room, I have to drag out my laptop, connect it to my tv and try to hide the cords and laptop all behind my TV stand. If I download a show from iTunes, I have to do the same thing all over again. I also love to multitask while watching TV and if my laptop is stuck next to my TV to play a show, it can be a real pain. The Stora solves these media consumption problems for me making it quite the lifesaver.
