Black Friday- Are you ready?

by on November 26th, 2014

bLACK FRIDAYIt’s that time again when you celebrate Thanksgiving, stuff your face with Turkey and on Black Friday go shopping. Black Friday seem to be the only time where it’s appropriate to act like the Tasmanian Devil pushing anyone out of your path to get that special gift. In my teens I worked retail and I literally saw two grown ladies fighting over the last tree skirt.

Back in the day I don’t recall any store being open besides gas stations. Each year it’s becoming a trend to shop on Thanksgiving Day. For those brave enough to go to the mall or major retailers below are links of companies that are offering Pre-Black Friday (Thanksgiving Day) and Black Friday sales including hours of operation:

  1. Pre-Black Friday retailers:
  2. Best Black Friday deals:
  3. Black Friday coupons:
  4. Stores Opening on Thanksgiving Day & Store Hours:

Just Say YES – Youth Equipped to Succeed

by on November 21st, 2014

YESThough I think Beyonce is overplayed “Pretty Hurts” really strikes a chord for me. If any of you were in modeling or pageants as kid you can relate to this song. I got into modeling at a young age; I will never forget when I got an agent. I was in HS running track and cross country but was told I had to quit because my leg muscles were too big (I was 5’8” and 120LBS). In the same meeting I was told I need a nose job and a boob job (thank god I didn’t do either).

I worked out besides cross country and track after school for another hour- totaling about 3 hours of cardio a day at 15 years old when I should be going to the movies with my friends. I lived off of toast (with no butter) and fruit. When I had to do runway sadly it was an industry standard for girls who aren’t naturally thin to throw up before the show. At 15 I was changing in front of men that were over 18 years old for photo shoots. When I hear any parent say they want their kids to be a model I cringe. I was fortunate that social media was not around back in my day because I continue to see how it effects teens currently.

As a writer for cutegeek I feel we are responsible for communicating to our audience that all girls and women are beautiful inside and out.  I found Just Say YES site that stands for Youth Equipped to Succeed. Just Say Yes is a nonprofit organization helping to equip teens to succeed by educating them through student assembly speakers and classroom curriculum. Their goal is empowering students to say YES to their dreams and goals and no to destructive choices.

My jaw dropped by this quote on their site:  “Teen girls are more afraid of gaining weight than they are of cancer, nuclear war, or losing a parent.”

As I continued to explore the Just Say Yes site I found the below statistics:

The Facts about Self Image

  • 40% of all 9 and 10-year-old girls have already been on a diet – Duke University
  • 70% of 6-12-year-olds want to be thinner – National Eating Disorders Association
  • In one study, 3 out of 4 women stated that they were overweight although only 1 out of 4 actually were – Rader Programs
  • While only one out of ten high school girls are overweight, nine out of ten high school juniors and seniors diet – Rader Programs
  • A study found that adolescent girls were more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer, nuclear war or losing their parents – Rader Programs
  • Teen pregnancy statistics show that girls who engage in unprotected sex often have lower self esteem – Family First Aid

The Facts about Media Influence on body image

The Facts about teens and Eating Disorders

If you are a teen (or heck you are in your 30’s like me) going through self or body image issues especially due to social media I encourage you to check out this site.  As women we need to stick together, empower each other and continue to deliver this message:

“Say YES to self-acceptance and no to negative body image.”

For more information how you or your school can get involved with Just Say Yes here is their site.

Cutegeek is CES & Showstoppers Bound!

CESI am very excited to announce I just received my confirmation for my press badge for CES 2015 and Showstoppers! It seems like yesterday I was at CES 2014; it was the first year I was solo and what an experience from meeting 50 cent to standing next the piano while John Legend serenated us. Looking back at my CES and Showstoppers experience my all-time favorite event was Showstoppers which showcased hands-on demos for press only (and they have an open bar and great food). At Showstoppers I had more face time with companies and had the opportunity to test out products (unlike CES where we are packed like sardines in the convention center and wait in line to see one product for a minute).

I learned a few things from CES 2014, CES Unveiled and Showstoppers to make this year more effective. First, no matter how cute your heals are walking a day in the Las Vegas Convention Center is murder on your feet! Second, when setting up media meetings schedule them in the same area of the convention center and give myself an hour between each meeting. Last, eat and take advantage of the free meals press gets. I would say to also rest and sleep while there but I won’t…BECAUSE IT’S VEGAS BABY!

CES this year has over 3,000 exhibiting companies and as much as I want to see everything unless I clone myself (one Nina in this world is enough) it’s just not going to happen. Just like last year I am reaching out to my cutegeek fans to tell me what you want me to check out at CES and Showstoppers.

Here is THE list of all the exhibitors thus far:

Cutegeek fans please use the below to submit your CES recommendation! Tell me what you think and for those fans also attending contact me as well. Watch out CES and Showstoppers here comes this cutegeek!

Review: Misfit Shine

by on November 11th, 2014

ShineOver the summer Misfit sent me the new Coca Cola inspired Shine activity and sleep monitor in red with a white sports band and Classic Tee with the Flash Pocket located on the sleeve…unfortunately they shipped it to my old address in San Francisco instead of my place in Austin. Fortunately I went back home to SF in August for a quick visit and picked up the new Shine to test out.

The Shine measures steps, calories burned, distance and sleep quality and duration by using the Misfit app which is compatible with iOS, Android, Windows phones and tablets. For those who have never seen the Shine it’s an Anodized Aircraft-grade Aluminum disc (about the size of a quarter) that attaches to you via magnetic clasp, watch band (comes in leather, plastic and mesh), Misfit Classic Tee, Misfit socks or necklace. The shine does comes with the clasp and sport band however you can upgrade to other accessories when you purchase it online.10667819_10152452576444125_1838238182_o

Unboxing the Shine is a bit of a geek experience; it comes in a nice box that has a magnet to keep the Shine stationary. After I placed the battery into the Shine I immediately synced it to my iPhone. Since I have one Shine already I was concerned that my iPhone would be confused by the two different Shines. To my amazement the Misfit app allows you to have more than 1 Shine (which is important since they come in different colors and for this fashionista I want my Shine to match my outfit).

After syncing I went into settings to personalize my Shine and set my goals. Immediately I realized the previous Shine I had did not have some of the same features. One new feature is the sleep monitor; I’m nocturnal so I was curious to see what it would read when I woke up the next AM. The sleep photo (2)monitor calculates the amount of “restful” sleep depending on your personal settings. I admit I was a sceptic at first till I woke up the next AM with my sleep results- it was dead on.

Another cool feature with the app is taking pictures of each meal you have so you can track what you have eaten in a day. The Shine also has the Lose it!, Runkeeper, Walgreens, and IFTTT (Misfit Channel) apps.

Though the market is flooded with new fitness devices I have been of a fan of the Shine since I received my first one at SXSW when I met the Misfit team. I love that it doesn’t look like a fitness band and more like a fashion piece. It has always been a conversation starter once someone sees it light up (though it gets annoying when people come tapping on it just to see the Shine lights- one time is ok several times from the same person warrants laser beams shooting out of my eyes).

The Shine activity and sleep monitor is available online at the Misfit site or at Target for $99.00.

Happy Single’s Day China

by on November 11th, 2014

c3c8f767a023b7727e4eabda440319aeThank you for making today the biggest shopping day of the year – I’m not sure how it compares to Black Friday or Cyber Monday in the states but I’m happy it exists.

Today can be considered the anti-Valentine’s Day of China or a reminder to the world to celebrate thy own self.

I prefer the latter.

I was intrigued to learn more about ‘Single’s Day’ or ‘Bachelor’s Day’ and learned it was started in the 90’s at universities in Nanjing – leave it to the students to discover cool stuff for the world.

Today is celebrated by partying, hanging out with friends, karaoke or trying your fortune.
