Sleeping with your laptop?

by on April 26th, 2011

If you’ve noticed that you haven’t been sleeping that great, I hate to tell you, but it might be due to your laptop (or iPad, phone, or any electronic with artificial light). The National Sleep Foundation has performed studies that link sleepless nights to the usage of electronics before bed.

“Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night suppresses release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, enhances alertness and shifts circadian rhythms to a later hour, making it more difficult to fall asleep.” (Huffington Post)

No, I’m not saying that we have to give up our gadgets, but merely reminding you to leave some time to yourself at the end of the day. Sleep is very important for not only mental health but also for physical health! So at the end of the night take some time and sip some tea, read a book, or my favorite STRETCH!

Here’s a video to help you unwind (and get yourself away from your beloved gadget, even if its only for a few minutes).

5 Moves for a better night’s sleep

Earth Day 2011

by on April 21st, 2011

Today is earth day and over the past day or so I have been able to play with two products from Belkin to help you save energy and be green, and also learned about a Wind Turbine that you can put together yourself in your own backyard.

The first of the two Belkin Products I was able to test out was the Belkin Conserve Socket. What is it? I wasn’t sure at first either when I heard the name, but its a socket with a timer. Basically it shuts power off to what ever device is plugged into it after 30, 180 or 360 minutes. Essentially it turns your wall socket into the perfect charging socket. Your cell phone, iPad or what ever mobile device you have can typically fully charge in less than 3 hours.

by on April 13th, 2011

The average college student is facing some difficult facts:

–          More young people are going to college, which means more young people are taking out student loans. In 2009, more than 70% of graduating high school students enrolled in college, the highest percentage on record.

–          A CollegeBoard report stated that the number of student loans issued in the 2009-2010 school year increased 10% from the previous year. Of the estimated $154.46 billion in student financial aid, 43% came in the form of federal student loans.

–          The latest Credit Karma data shows that the average consumer has $29,151 in student loans.

–          The Class of 2011 will be graduating into an economy with a 9.2% unemployment rate.

Is your head spinning from all the numbers yet? It’s very possible that this generation’s graduates will be in more student loan debt than Americans have ever had to face.

I have tried out and it was really easy to use. You select the item you want to make, in my case it was a photo book, you upload the pictures and you place them into the book the way you want. You can easily resize, tilt and move around the pictures on the pages. You can also have the pictures be placed automatically onto the product you are making.

Getupp – Get Motivated!

by on April 1st, 2011

getuppIf you have trouble staying motivated then Getupp just might be the webapp (and iPhone app) for you! Getupp uses GPS to help you stay committed to your activities. So if my goal is to go to the gym, I log it into my Getupp app. At the end of the day if I feel too tired and go to the grocery store instead, it calls me out on it! ON FACEBOOK!

Getup also tells your friends when you make a commitment, then shares the outcome (both, if you kept it or  if you didn’t). This can be a great way to help you stay motivated to achieve your personal goals!

Getupp features 18 different commitment types, gym, running, study, work early/late, do taxes…etc. I’m not sure if it will help me do my laundry or clean my house, but it will definitely help me get to the gym, track, trail or park.

Check out Getupp at the link below! Check back and let me know how it has helped you achieve your goals and stay motivated!! 🙂
