Facebook.com, MySpace.com, LinkedIn.com and other sites are the kinds of things that pop into my head when I think of ‘social networking’ and I know I’m not the only one. If you walk into a coffee shop, or a barnes and noble, you’ll be lucky if you don’t find a bunch of people online, on those sites – the interesting part is that they’re not networking at the locations, although they’re almost sitting on each others laps.
Technology has made it harder for people to network the old school way, through the exchange of a smile, a smirk, a little comment, the exchange of a business card, etc. We are now too into our gadgets, our phones, Bluetooths, headphones, etc. – or so I thought…
On my drive to work this week, I was surprised to see an advertisement for Patron (the tequila), and no it wasn’t because it was Patron, but because the only words on the gigantic billboard was “Social Networking”.
Really? Wow. Alrighty then.
That’s the first thing that came to mind – what happened to being online and exchanging ‘LOLs’?
Two days later, I was in a bar, in a private room, with a karaoke machine, a Wii, a bunch of coworkers and empty shot glasses.
Ohhhh – so that’s what that billboard meant. Duh!
Technology is infiltrating into what we consider social networking, but not only online, in our real lives.
I have never had so much fun in my life with the coworkers that I now consider friends. Who would think that playing video games, and making complete fools of ourselves singing ridiculous songs would cause so much happiness – I didn’t.
I don’t even own a Wii at home, and never quite understood WOW parties, Halo, etc (I’m not a gamer), but I can tell you I’m waiting for the new Super Mario game to come out so that I can buy one. Happy Hours are not only about drinking but about actually socializing with others, having fun, and letting loose.
Check out the special coworker, aka GQ, who has brought this new level of social networking into all of our lives. This was all made possible to the downtown Sheraton in Dallas. Their Draft Bar is the first of its kind, at least in my world, to have private rooms with Wii stations, Karaoke machines and endless ways of having a good time.
Technology, with the help of a special something is bringing social networking to a different level, Americans are now starting to emulate other cultures, that being the Japanese. Who would’ve thunk it?
